Clarence Gagnon’s beloved paintings for Maria Chapdelaine are on view once again at McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
Created in the 1930s, the series of 54 miniature paintings were commissioned to illustrate French novelist Louis Hemon’s book, Maria Chapdelaine.
“Celebrated as a pinnacle of Canadian book illustration, Gagnon’s works vividly capture the beauty and spirit of the Quebec countryside and have been enchanting art lovers and readers alike for generations,” according to the gallery.
“For reasons of conservation, these delicate paintings from the McMichael’s permanent collection can only be displayed once every three years, making their holiday season return a truly special occasion.”
The paintings are on view until Feb. 17, 2025. Gagnon’s work is also part of the group exhibition, River of Dreams: Impressionism on the St. Lawrence, on view at the McMichael through Jan. 12, 2025. ■
