Calgary-based photographer Angela Boehm has released a new book, Minus 30, a collection of photos of the Alberta and Saskatchewan prairies — all taken in the winter and only when the temperature was -30 C or below.
“Winters in rural Saskatchewan shaped my childhood. Snowbanks seemed like mini mountains, and the whited air of deep winter became a backdrop to memory,” she says.
“Over time, the echoes of those winters have softened, fading along with what seems like the severity of winter itself. As winters become milder, the delicate beauty of those moments feels as though it's slipping away. My first monograph, Minus 30, is my response to absorbing myself back in that world.”
Published by Germany’s Hartmann Books, her book will be featured at the Hartmann Books location at Paris Photo Nov. 7 to 10 at the Grand Palais in Paris, France. Boehm will be at Paris Photo to sign copies and limited-edition prints from the book will also be available.
Then she will be in Calgary on Nov. 30, where she will sign copies of Minus 30 at Franz Dopf Gallery.
Boehm’s work has been featured at Contemporary Calgary and at the London Photo Festival in England. She has received many awards, including the London Photo Festival Landscape Award, the Exposure Photography Festival Emerging Photographer Award, and the In Focus Festival Landscape Award. ■
