“My work is full of ideas. It's not just images. They're tied to complex history,” David Garneau told Windspeaker in 2023.
Garneau's latest solo exhibition, Visual Poetry, is on view Oct. 10 through Oct. 31 at Assiniboia Gallery in Regina, Sask.
The show's opening will take place Oct. 11 starting at 5 pm. The artist will be in attendance.
An associate professor in University of Regina's Faculty of Fine Arts, Garneau is a Métis artist, writer, curator and professor, who received the Governor General's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Visual and Media Arts in 2023.
The University of Regina Press, which published his book, Dark Chapters, describes Garneau as “one of Canada’s foremost Métis artists, painters, and public intellectuals, who has been leading the charge in complex conversations around the nuances of Métis identity and the politics of Indigeneity, Indigenization, and non-colonial aesthetics in the colonized lands of Canada.”
Born in Edmonton, Garneau holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Calgary, as well as a master of arts in American Literature. His first exhibition was at Bearclaw Gallery in Edmonton in 1980; now his art is found in collections around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada. ■
