As anyone who has lived in Alberta knows, the region gets some spectacular summer storms, with clouds and light unlike anywhere else in the world.
Painter and storm chaser Ian Sheldon turns those storms into inspiration for his landscapes.
New Works by Ian Sheldon is on view now through Sept. 5 at Gibson Fine Art in Calgary.
“I am part of this land as this land is part of me,” he says. “Only in the prairies do I feel connected and complete. The landscapes I depict come from the heart, mind and real place.”
“Every brushstroke reveals his passion for the prairies' tempestuous weather, transforming the wildness of nature into vibrant, dramatic canvases that pulse with life,” the Gibson Fine Art team adds.
Born in Edmonton, Sheldon began painting while studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. Since then, he has expanded to glasswork and illustrations, which have been published in nature guides across North America. His book, Storm Chaser: Prairie Landscapes, features 80 of his paintings and was published by Argenta Press in 2011. ■
