Model. Studio assistant and muse to Man Ray. Fashion photographer. Second World War correspondent.
Lee Miller’s life was the stuff of legend.
This fall, The Image Centre (IMC) in Toronto showcases some of her life and art in the exhibition, Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work (1932–1945), on view from Sept. 11 to Dec. 7.
The public opening takes place Sept. 11 from 6 to 8 pm. IMC Exhibitions Curator Gaëlle Morel and Eve Townsend will leads tours of the show on Sept. 18 and Nov. 27.
Curated by Morel, the show covers the highlights of Miller’s career, including her work as a fashion photographer for Vogue magazine in London, England, and her groundbreaking work as a war correspondent and photojournalist in Europe.
While Miller is perhaps most famous for the photo of her taking a bath in Adolf Hitler's bath tub at the end of the Second World War, there was much, much more to her life and career.
“From 1942 to 1945, she documented the harrowing realities of World War II, bringing them to the forefront of public consciousness — including the liberation of Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps, cementing her legacy as a pioneering photojournalist,” notes the IMC team.
Although Lee Miller: A Photographer at Work was created in collaboration with the Lee Miller Archives in England, and was first presented during Les Rencontres d’Arles, France, in 2022, this Toronto exhibition features photographs that have never been seen by the public, newly printed in 2023 by the Lee Miller Archives. ■
