What does Haida and Tlingit artist Robert Davidson have in common with 18th century Spanish painter Francisco de Goya?
Both have work on view in the excellent group show, Stories that animate us, on now through Sept. 22 at Kelowna Art Gallery.
Organized and curated by the Vancouver Art Gallery, the exhibition features works on paper and animation from a range of artists including David Hockney, Francisco de Goya, Canadian conceptual artist Joyce Wieland, Robert Davidson, Amanda Strong, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo, Marina Roy, Jérôme Havre, Cauleen Smith, Camille Turner, Ed Pien, and the Royal Art Lodge.
Viewers are invited to explore and reflect on the importance of storytelling in the art — and in their own lives.
“The stories showcased in this exhibition span from the small to the sweeping, featuring a selection of both Canadian and international voices,” says Christine May, Kelowna Art Gallery’s curator. “Visitors can explore the eerie etchings of Goya, the depictions of the charismatic character Raven in Robert Davidson’s screenprints, and watch a short film that features three puppet avatars who delve into the deep questions of land, home, and belonging by artists Jérôme Havre, Cauleen Smith and Camille Turner — all in the same gallery space.” ■
