What does voice mean?” This is the question Roy Arden is exploring in his upcoming mixed media exhibition, Vox at Monte Clark Gallery. Using collage, oils and sculpture, Arden focuses on types of voice—ranging from speaking and social to musical and poetic. Arden had been working in photography for more than three decades when he made a dramatic departure five years ago to explore new media. “I had lots of ideas stored up,” he says. “I was missing the possibilities other media offered, as well as the tactility.” Arden says the theme for Vox came to him following the completion of a few smaller works. Taken as a whole, the ambitious exhibition can be seen as a poem rich in allusions to people and events, from the French Revolution to the Beatles. “There will be an eclectic range of cultural and historical references,” Arden says. “I look at the personal and the political.”
