Jillian McDonald, "Thaw," 2015, video production still
Landscapes with traces of past or present horror are central to Jillian McDonald’s recent work. McDonald developed The Thaw, a video and installation project, during a residency in southwestern Manitoba last March. It was produced with the help of some 20 volunteer actors, who were masked and costumed in white to play roles as animals – both predator and prey – that wake from hibernation and begin to hunt. Meanwhile, Tahltan artist Peter Morin, a professor at Brandon University, will create a new work, Glacier, that responds to elements of McDonald’s piece.
