Greg Girard | Snack Sakura
Photographer explores the personalities and history behind popular Japanese hangouts
Travel vicariously through Japan after hours through Canadian photographer Greg Girard’s latest exhibition, Snack Sakura, on view April 20 to May 18 at Monte Clark Gallery in Vancouver.
From 2017 to 2022, Girard documented snack bars across Japan. These tiny bars are places where regulars can hang out, maybe sing some karaoke and have a few drinks. Food is served, he notes, but it may be as simple as some peanuts.
“A snack is a small bar in Japan — usually a counter, a few stools and a woman working behind the bar,” Girard tells videographer and Galleries West contributor Mark Mushet. “At its core, it’s a simple drinking place.”
A publication, also entitled Snack Sakura, features the full series and is available at the gallery.
Born in Vancouver, Girard is a world-renowned photographer who has spent much of his life living and working in Asia. His photos are found in publications and galleries around the world, including the Vancouver Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada. ■
