Peek inside a secluded artists’ studio, a revitalized Arts and Crafts home and more at “Doors Open Banff”
The lifestyles, tastes and architecture of some of Banff’s early citizens will be shared and showcased during Doors Open Banff. Normally tucked behind closed doors, 25 locations including historic homes, rustic cabins and churches will open their doors and welcome visitors inside on August 11, 2013, between 1 and 4 p.m.
Returning to Doors Open Banff with a new street address is the Painter Residence. American architect Walter Painter, chief designer for the Canadian Pacific Railway, originally built the home on Buffalo Street in 1913. In 2008, the home was generously donated to The Banff Centre by Glen and Ann Sather and relocated to the Leighton Artists’ Colony. Transformed into a spacious and secluded studio, the Painter Residence now provides opportunities for established artists to work individually or collaboratively on such projects as the creation of a new play, musical composition or performance.
New to Doors Open Banff this year is the Crosby home, fondly know as Abegweit. Built in 1913 by Louis and Gertrude Crosby, this Tudor and Mission style Arts and Crafts home was once an important social centre in the community. Closed to the public for decades, Abegweit recently underwent a major rejuvenation, with many people volunteering their time, energy and resources to give a fresh start to the home. Featuring maple flooring, intricate interior wood work and a pebbled exterior, the home was designed based on a plan developed by Mr. Crosby that emulated eastern Canadian homes.
Doors Open Banff takes place on Sunday, August 11, 2013, between 1 and 4 p.m.
Maps indicating participating properties will be available at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies (111 Bear Street) and at Doors Open Banff information booths, located at Bison Courtyard (211 Bear Street) and beside the Banff Park Museum (the corner of Banff Avenue and Buffalo Street).
