Forbidden City comes to Vancouver Art Gallery
The Vancouver Art Gallery will host a major show later this year – The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors. The exhibition, which opens Oct. 18, features nearly 200 objects from the collections of Beijing’s Palace Museum.
It’s the first-ever chance for Vancouver residents to view objects from an architectural site long shrouded in mystery. The Forbidden City, which served China’s rulers from 1416 to 1911 during the Ming and Qing dynasties, contains some 10,000 rooms with over a million ceremonial, diplomatic and domestic artifacts. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
