Nominations are now open for the 2023 Sobey Art Award, one of the most important prizes for contemporary Canadian art.
The award's top prize offers a purse of $100,000, while four other artists on the short list will receive $25,000 each. As well, $10,000 will go to each of the 15 remaining artists on the long list.
The winners, selected by an independent jury consisting of curators from five Canadian regions, as well as one international juror, will be announced in the fall.
The five shortlisted artists will be featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. Works by the 2022 shortlisted artists, including the winner, Divya Mehra, are on display at the Ottawa gallery until March 12.
Nominations are open until 8 p.m. on March 10, and can be made by recognized agents, artists and institutions.
Past winners include Ursula Johnson, Kapwani Kiwanga, Stephanie Comilang and Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory.
