2024 Sobey Art Award Long List Unveiled
The Sobey Art Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada have announced the 2024 Sobey Art Award long list.
Thirty artists are in the running for $465,000 in prize money, one of the largest visual arts awards prizes in the world.
This year’s contemporary visual arts awards have been expanded to include the circumpolar region. The addition of the region — which includes Nunavut, northern Quebec, Labrador, Yukon and NWT — means that five artists from the circumpolar North will be longlisted and one shortlisted for the award.
The circumpolar finalists are Eldred Allen, Casey Koczan, Taqralik Partridge, Jason Sikoak and Jessica Winters.
Introducing the circumpolar region to the contest is “enabling us to recognize and learn from five more innovative artistic voices,” said Jonathan Shaughnessy, the National Gallery’s director of curatorial initiatives, in a news release.
Pacific finalists are Judy Chartrand, Sara Cwynar, Barry Doupé, Zoe Kreye and Peter Morin.
Prairie finalists include Erica Eyres, Audie Murray, Marigold Santos, Rhayne Vermette and Aikaterini Zegeye-Gebrehiwot.
Ontario finalists include June Clark, Sameer Farooq, Timothy Yanick Hunter, Oluseye Ogunlesi and Chrysanne Stathacos.
Quebec finalists include Chun Hua Catherine Dong, Miles Greenberg, Frances Adair Mckenzie, Eve Tagny and Nico Williams.
Atlantic finalists include Carrie Allison, Rémi Belliveau, Séamus Gallagher, Matthieu Léger and Lucas Morneau.
The short list of six artists and jury members will be announced on June 11.
An exhibition featuring works from artists will run from Oct. 2, 2024 to March 16, 2025.
The 2024 Sobey Art Award winner will be announced Nov. 9.
Established in 2002, the Sobey Art Award has fostered the careers of artists including Jean-Pierre Gauthier, Daniel Barrow and Ursula Johnson, as well as the 2023 winner, Kablusiak. The award supports innovation in contemporary visual arts and brings attention to Canadian artists both domestically and abroad.
