The Alberta College of Art and Design has become the province's newest university and will be known as the Alberta University of the Arts.
The province's only post-secondary institution devoted exclusively to art, craft and design, it will get an increased base operating grant from the Alberta government.
Daniel Doz, the university's president, said it is a historic and exciting moment for the 92-year-old institution, and noted that this year's graduating class will convocate from the Alberta University of the Arts.
M. Carol Ryder, chair of the institution's board of governors, said the government's decision also comes with a one-time capital investment for campus infrastructure.
Specifics on the amount of operating and capital funding were not released publicly.
The university also comes with a new visual brand. It was created with assistance from Will Creative, including co-founders Nick Richards and Ute Preusse, and art director Allison Chambers, who graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2005.
