AGA Opens New Exhibition with 24-Hour Screening

AGA invites visitors to spend the night to mark the western Canadian debut of Christian Marclay's acclaimed work The Clock.

The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is pleased to present The Clock, a ground-breaking 24-hour video installation by Christian Marclay. In addition to screenings during regular Gallery hours, The Clock will be shown in its entirety during three 24-hour screenings, the first of which takes place when the exhibition opens on February 13, 2015 at 7 pm.

The Clock is a brilliantly edited montage of thousands of clips sampled from movies and television series, demarcating, minute by minute, a 24-hour loop that audiences are invited to watch and listen to. The work, assembled over the course of three years, unifies these disparate fragments into a coherent whole that unfolds in real time, functioning as an actual clock, allowing viewers to tell the precise time of day. Beyond its technical wizardry and dizzying accumulation of images, The Clock manages to create its own fiction, its own suspense, as time becomes the narrative. The single-channel video installation, presented in a distinctive setting designed by the artist, immerses audiences in a multitude of different periods and genres of cinema.

The Clock has received wide acclaim from audiences and critics. In 2011, it received the prestigious Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art. An extravaganza of images and sound, The Clock is a remarkable, unique cultural experience.

24-Hour Screenings

To ensure access to the rarely seen late-evening and early-morning portions of The Clock, the AGA will host 24-hour screenings on three occasions. These screenings provide Gallery visitors an exclusive opportunity to witness the work in its entirety and experience the AGA in a unique way. The 24-hour screenings will take place on the following dates:

Friday February 13, 7 pm to Saturday, February 14, 7 pm  

Friday, March 13, 11 am to Saturday, March 14, 5 pm

Saturday, April 11, 11 am to Sunday, April 12, 5 pm

During 24-hour screenings, Shop AGA will be open until 10 pm and the bar at Zinc restaurant will remain open until 1 am.

About Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay is a visual artist and composer based in London and New York. He began his career as a musician in New York’s underground scene in the 1970s before making a name for himself as a trail-blazing artist who has received acclaim for his innovative sampling, fragmentation and mixing of found audio and video pieces. His work has been featured in prestigious institutions including Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Tate Modern in London and Musée d’art moderne et contemporain in Geneva.
