Alberta Arts Writing Prize Opens for Submissions

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is accepting submissions from students and emerging writers 18 years and older for the SAAG Arts Writing Prize, hosted in partnership with Galleries West magazine.

Submissions of original, unpublished works can be submitted until July 5 in three categories: Arts Writing, Poetry & Prose, and the Aruna D’Souza Award for BIPOC writers.

Winners will be announced in August. Prizes range from $250 to $1,000, online publication in Galleries West or Canadian Art, and a one-month residency at the Gushul Studio Writers Cottage in Blairmore, Alta.

All submissions will be published in the SAAG Arts Writing Prize Reader, which will be produced in-house at the gallery’s publication studio.

Applicants for the Arts Writing and Poetry & Prose categories must be Alberta residents. The Aruna D’Souza Award is open to residents of Canada.

The jury includes Portia Priegert, editor of Galleries West magazine; Adam Whitford, the gallery's curatorial and publications coordinator; and independent art critic Aruna D’Souza.
