The Alberta Biennial is expanding to include Saskatchewan in 2020.
The Remai Modern in Saskatoon will partner with the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton to develop and present a joint biennial exhibition.
“Working with the AGA to broaden the biennial is an incredible opportunity for Remai Modern to collaborate and supports our curatorial team in undertaking studio visits with artists throughout the region,” said Sandra Fraser, the Remai's curator of collections.
Working with the theme of borders, the biennial team is seeking submissions from Prairie artists, physically or otherwise within, from, or in proximity to the borders of Treaty 4, Treaty 6, Treaty 7, Treaty 8 and Treaty 10. The deadline is May 1.
The biennial will be presented in two concurrent exhibitions at the AGA and the Remai.
The exhibition curators are Lindsey V. Sharman and Franchesca Hebert-Spence, both from the AGA, along with Fraser and Felicia Gay, a guest curator for the Remai.
Since its inception in 1996, the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art has presented new works by 211 contemporary artists from Alberta. The Art Gallery of Alberta has partnered with other Alberta organizations to produce and present the biennial but the Remai is the first partner outside the province.
