Works by the six winners of the 2021 Alberta Craft Awards are currently on view at the Alberta Craft Council’s gallery in Calgary. The awards are given out every two years to recognize artists who contribute to the culture of craft in Alberta.
Mixed-media artist Pamma FitzGerald received the $1,000 Early Achievement Award. She has a studio in Calgary and in Caunes-Minervois, France, and works with collage, drawing, wax and clay.
Métis artist Sharon Rose Kootenay Cherweniuk received the $1,000 Excellence Award. A self-taught artist, she creates intricate geometric beadwork and was a founding member of the Aboriginal Arts Council of Alberta.
Edmonton-based ceramic artist Kaleb Romano was awarded the $2,000 Linda Stanier & Family Memorial Award for Excellence in Ceramics. He runs The Shop Art and Ceramic Studio in Edmonton, where he teaches and makes work.
The $1,000 Tom McFall Honour Award was won by Calgary-based glass artist Natali Rodrigues and Canmore-based jewelry artist Kari Woo.
New this year, the $2,000 Fibre Arts Award, endowed by the Hand Weavers, Spinners and Dyers of Alberta, went to Edmonton-based fibre artist Jessica Fern Facette, who has studied weaving around the world, and runs Fern’s School of Craft.
