Alberta is the latest province to close art galleries and museums due to spiking rates of COVID-19.
Premier Jason Kenney announced lock-down style one-month closures to take effect Sunday that include galleries, museums, libraries, science centres and interpretive centres.
The Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton says it will close as of Dec. 10.
"In these challenging times, our staff will still be actively working to create great new content on our communication channels to keep you and your family engaged with art activities, artists’ talks and more," said publicity coordinator Kerrie Sanderson. "We invite you to join us as a digital visitor at youraga.ca and @youraga on social media until we can open again."
Calgary's Glenbow Museum announced on its website that it has closed until 2021.
The Esker Foundation in Calgary is closed for the installation of its next shows. They include Louise Bourgeois: What is the Shape of This Problem, Chris Curreri: Thick Skull, Thin Skin and Fin Simonetti: An Appeal to Heaven, all launching on Jan. 23.
Health leaders in Alberta have been calling for weeks for stronger restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Alberta's new public health measures include mandatory indoor masking and closures of bars, restaurants, lounges and casinos. Retail outlets can continue operating at reduced capacity.
Winnipeg is also under tight COVID-19 restrictions, that include the closure of the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
