Allison Yearwood to Head Winnipeg's Plug In
Allison Yearwood has been appointed as executive director of the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art in Winnipeg, effective this month.
Yearwood, who holds a political science and business administration degree from the University of Winnipeg, brings international experience to the job.
She returns to Winnipeg, her hometown, from the Banff Centre, where she was program manager in the Indigenous Arts Department.
Her previous experience includes working as the art and business manager at Yamaji Art, an Aboriginal art centre in Australia, and as the general manager of the Collective of Black Artists in Toronto. Yearwood was also the programming and events coordinator at the Northern Life Museum and Cultural Centre in Fort Smith, N.W.T., and the first non-Indigenous staff member at the Urban Shaman Gallery in Winnipeg.
Yearwood advocates for racialized and disenfranchised groups to decolonize institutions of power from the ground up, Plug In said in its announcement.
"She is exceptionally skilled on issues of equity and a powerful and transformative voice for anti-racism action," it noted. "Allison’s institutional critique articulates the creation of safe spaces for underserved communities within the institution."
