Armando Perla is New Head Curator at Textile Museum of Canada
The Textile Museum of Canada has appointed Armando Perla as head curator, effective June 5.
Perla, who will oversee the artistic direction of the Toronto museum, vowed to make the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples a reality in the museum.
"I look forward to opening spaces that prioritize the development of collaborative exhibitions and programs that showcase the textiles, fashion and stories of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island, as well as those of Black, other racialized folks and queer communities," he said.
Kirsten Kamper, the museum's director, called Perla "an accomplished curator, engaging speaker and synergistic connector."
"A social justice advocate, Armando breaks down barriers with compassion," she said. "Their impact will be felt immediately, and staff look forward to building something transformative together."
Perla has been chief curator at the Toronto History Museums at the City of Toronto, and has served as vice-president on the board of the Canadian Museums Association.
A doctoral candidate in art history and museology at the University of Montreal, Perla holds a Master of Laws degree in international human rights law from Lund University and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Sweden.
Former curatorial director Sarah Quinton, who led the institution for 28 years, was appointed curatorial director emeritus after her departure in 2022.
