Vancouver's Arts Umbrella, a non-profit arts education organization for young people, has opened its new home in the Granville Island building once occupied by Emily Carr University.
The 50,000-square-foot facility is three times larger that Arts Umbrella's former building, also on Granville Island.
The new space is expected to see 15,000 children and youth annually access tuition-based programs and performances, as well as community programs and distance learning courses.
Arts Umbrella has raised more than $36 million of its $37 million capital campaign, including $9.6 million from the federal government and $1.4 million from the province.
The facility includes six dance studios and four theatre, music and film studios with specialized technical and audio equipment. As well, there are 10 art studios, including media labs and a photography darkroom, a 132-seat theatre and a public exhibition space.
