B.C. Culture Days is launching a video series that focuses on the creative resilience of five remote communities during the pandemic.
The series, RE:GENERATE, launches Sept. 24 with a film from Prince Rupert. Each week of the month-long event, a new video will be released online, featuring events and interviews from Bella Coola, Sooke, Salmon Arm and Kimberley. The last video will be released Oct. 22.
B.C. Culture Days partnered with local arts councils and arts organizations in each community, providing funding for community creators to direct and film the videos themselves.
“People were invited to examine what they did during the COVID-19 pandemic and found that the process actually clarified that they had done a lot more work than they imagined,” says Sandra Jones, president of the Prince Rupert Community Arts Council.
“They went into the process believing that they had been stalled and, upon reflection, realized that they had accomplished a great deal – often in ways that were new and unusual for them.”
The project was undertaken in response to the situation last year, when B.C. Culture Days had to adapt its programming to an online format, posing a challenge for several remote communities that were unable to participate.
