B.C. Museums Week, from May 16 to May 22, this year celebrates how museums across the province are pushing boundaries and defying expectations, whether it's creating new community spaces, confronting difficult truths or shifting the focus from collections to people.
“The past two years have tested museums like never before, but our sector is rising to the challenge,” says Ryan Hunt, executive director of the B.C. Museums Association. “Museums are using their voices to challenge the status quo, bring communities together and, ultimately, fight for a better future.”
Public highlights include:
- A free online lecture on May 18 with Ry Moran, the University of Victoria's inaugural associate librarian for reconciliation, who explores the importance of truth-telling in reconciliation and healing.
- A cross-country panel on May 20 of emerging cultural leaders who imagine the future of Canadian arts, culture and heritage.
B.C.'s museum sector employs some 4,400 people and accounts for revenues of $225 million annually.
