B.C.'s Jared Last Wins National Glass Award
B.C. artist Jared Last has won the $10,000 RBC Award for Glass.
Last, based in Revelstoke, will use the money for a residency to continue his creative exploration and advance his practice, said the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Ont., which administers the award.
Last's work will be featured in an awards exhibition alongside three finalists, all from Montreal – Charlie Larouche-Potvin, Jeanne Létourneau and Jérémie St-Onge – as well as the winner and finalists of the 2022 Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics.
The finalists each receive $1,000 to support the development of their practices.
Last has a BFA in glass from the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary and recently completed a three-year residency at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. His work expresses interests in colour, pattern and architecture.
The jurors – craft researcher Juliette MacDonald and glass artists Laura Donefer and Julia Reimer – described Last's work as striking.
"He is clearly fully dedicated to the discipline and enthusiastic to develop as an artist whilst also supporting new workers in the field," they said.
