ABOUT BARRY
Throughout my life, I have advocated for traditional needle crafts, as a teacher, mentor, curator and artist. My craft career began in the late 1960’s at the tender age of six making stump work buttons - I was paid a shilling for five button bases readied for goldwork. I have been involved with needle craft ever since. My professional career as a textile artist began in the early 1980’s. As a contributor for “British Patchwork & Quilting” magazine I wrote tutorials on miniature work and designed a miniature quilt to commemorate their 200th issue. I was featured in “Canadian Quilter” as one of five men working professionally as fiber artists in Canada. One of the most exciting moments of my career was being commissioned by Reader’s Digest to create the samples for the updated publication of “Complete Guide to Sewing”.My work as a textile educator and curator in the UK, France, Canada and the USA has introduced me to many different possibilities in textiles. I have adjudicated textile exhibitions in England, Wales, Canada and New York state and have participated in international textile exhibitions in Birmingham, UK. In the past few years, I've worked in Fort St. John, BC at Peace Gallery North to promote local artists and to introduce new emerging talent. As Executive Director, Chair and Program Coordinator for the Peace Arts Gallery, I worked as an advocate for the arts and artists of Peace River.
