Beth Carter Joins the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art

The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art announced the appointment of Beth Carter to the position of Curator as of April 13, 2015.

Beth Carter

Beth has over thirty years of curatorial experience and a lifelong passion for the art of the Northwest Coast. She was the curator of Indigenous Studies at the Glenbow Museum where she was responsible for the Northwest Coast collections, and the creation of Nitsitapiisinni: Our Way of Life, a 9,000 square foot gallery about the Blackfoot people. Beth has worked with both traditional and contemporary Northwest Coast art, and has curated community outreach exhibitions dealing with contemporary issues such as homelessness, drug addiction, and HIV. Since 2009 she has worked as the Director / Curator of the Nikkei National Museum in Burnaby. Beth has a Bachelor of Arts (Art History) from UBC and a Masters in Social Anthropology and Museum Studies from the University of Cambridge.

“It is an honour to be able to curate and program the magnificent work of Bill Reid in the SFU Art Collection, and to collaborate with emerging as well as established Northwest Coast artists and curators like Kwiaahwah Jones to present art of the highest quality” said Beth Carter.

Beth will work together with Kwiaahwah Jones to provide the curatorial vision for the Biuill Reid Gallery.

Kwiaahwah combines extensive traditional knowledge with her own art practice and curatorial experience. Kwi joined the Bill Reid Gallery in 2010 as a consulting curator. During her tenure she was awarded an Art Administration Mentorship Grant by the First Peoples Cultural Council. As part of this mentorship, she co-curated the ground breaking exhibition, Rez Erect: Native Erotica (2013). Kwiaahwah became Director of Content in 2014 and in that capacity she curated Ts’msyen Transforming: Morgan Green (2014), AKOS: Corey Bulpitt (2014) and Godanxee’wat: Stone Ribs Gwaai Edenshaw (2015). Going forward, Kwi will share curatorial responsibility for the Gallery with Beth Carter to allow more time for her artistic practice.
