The Winnipeg Art Gallery has received $2 million from the North West Company for a community plaza adjacent to its new Inuit Art Centre.
The four-storey centre, slated to open in 2020, will house the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world. The building is expected to cost $65 million, and will include exhibition spaces, a glass-enclosed visible art vault and a theatre.
The North West Company operates retail and grocery stores, including Northern Stores, NorthMart and Giant Tiger, in northern Canadian communities.
Federal, provincial and municipal governments have donated $35 million to the centre, with the remaining $30 million coming from community fundraising. With this contribution, the campaign is less than $10 million from its goal.
