The Contemporary Art Gallery has developed a new public art project with Vancouver-based artist Myfanwy MacLeod that coincides with this year's 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act between Canada and the United States.
MacLeod’s newest work, Neighbours, a series of 12 different watercolour images of birds, will be displayed at various transit shelters throughout Vancouver. Each species of birds is familiar in the city, yet comes from elsewhere. The series includes the house sparrow, the common nightingale, the calliope hummingbird and the sandhill crane.
The anniversary will also see the re-installation of MacLeod’s acclaimed 2010 public piece, The Birds, at Vancouver’s Olympic Village. The sculptures were removed for repairs last November.
MacLeod is best known for irreverent artworks that draw upon conceptual and minimalist themes that often explore intersections of pop culture, art history and folk traditions. She is represented by the Catriona Jeffries gallery in Vancouver.
