We are grateful to Douglas Maclean for his personal reflections:
HARVIE, William John
September 8, 1928 – Edmonton, Alberta; February 15, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta
Artist, lawyer, judge, and over all dedicated Albertan, William John Harvie left us on February 15th. Many have seen his watercolours of the Rocky Mountains over the years, Masters Gallery did exhibitions at the 17th Avenue gallery in the 1980's, when 17th was "happening". Yes they were straight up. Mountain images done with a steady hand, painted on site, of which in our world we have seen so many. But Harvie had a sincere belief and love for what he pursued. In his obituary one line for his accomplishments for Law & Justice, as a judge, and 10 more for his art making, skiing, hiking and curiosity of life in general. In Calgary his watercolours can still be seen in some galleries, and at art auction.
BRES, Hendrik
October 20, 1932 - February 14, 2018
Hendrik Bres to some may be unknown. Of Dutch descent, Hendrik was a strong and devoted painter of landscape. My Canadian Art gallery represented his work for a number of years through the 1980's to the 1990's. Soft spoken and a very nice man, Bres was light and lively with colour. He loved the Emma Lake school, although he found his own path. In the heady days of "corporate" art committees buying for their collection Bres was an artist who met with approval.
