Calgary City Council approves $24.5M in capital funding for Centennial Planetarium
Calgary Centennial Planetarium
Calgary's City Council has approved $24.5M in capital funding from the Cultural Municipal Sustainability Initiative Program (MSIP) over three years to revive the iconic Centennial Planetarium as a Class “A”, multi-phased public/private arts facility in collaboration with other government and private patrons and partners.
The Centennial Planetarium, designed by John Wilmer ‘Jack’ Long of McMillan, Long and Associates opened in 1967 as part of Canada’s centennial celebration and is recognized as a civic asset and a rare example of the brutalist architectural style.
The historic building will be re-imagined and resurrected as a modern space for contemporary art exhibitions, education, events and conversation starting with ‘Temporary Contemporary’ — using the North Shed space for interim programming while the larger project is completed.
