Calgary filmmaker Nick Johnson's feature-length animated film, Sunburnt Unicorn, has been selected to compete at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival/Festival international du film d'animation d'Annecy in Annecy, France.
The festival takes place June 9 to 15.
Created in association with Squid Brain Studios and New Machine Studios, the film was made with a team from Alberta and B.C., including Sho Uehara, Isabelle Ackroyd and Natasha Jensen. The film's writer and director, Johnson is an assistant professor at the Alberta University of the Arts, where he teaches illustration and character design.
“Sunburnt Unicorn follows an injured youth who adopts the identity of a mythical unicorn to survive surreal encounters and rescue his father from the Cactus King. Inspired by family adventure films of the 1980s, fans of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth and Wolfgang Petersen’s The NeverEnding Story can expect epic adventure and a lot of heart,” according to a news release from AUArts.
