The Canada Council for the Arts has presented the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) with the 2024 York Wilson Endowment Award. The award is presented annually to non-profit art museums and public art galleries so that they may buy original works by living, contemporary Canadian painters and sculptors.
The AGA used the award to acquire Culture in the Key of Kerry, Sung by my Aunties on a Saturday Afternoon, by Curtis Talwst Santiago. Born in Edmonton in 1949, Talwst Santiago is a musician and artist whose work has been shown internationally at Biennale de Dakar in Senegal, the Toronto Biennale of Art, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in the US, the Art Gallery of Ontario and Art Gallery of Alberta. He now splits his time between Munich, Germany; New York City; Lisbon, Portugal, and Toronto, Canada.
“His work consists of paintings, large-scale installations and sculptures, and miniature scenes (dioramas) depicting memories from Santiago’s upbringing in Caribbean-Canadian culture,” according to the news release.
