An overview from the Canada Council for the Arts shows it gave $246 million to support the arts in its 2018/19 fiscal year, up from $205 million in the previous year.
Some $184.8 million went to 2,032 arts organizations, while grants to 2,851 artists accounted for $49.2 million. There were 1,621 first-time recipients, and funding went to 711 communities across Canada.
Ontario and Quebec accounted for roughly $80 million each in spending. British Columbia stood at $36.2 million, Alberta at $12.6 million, Manitoba at $9.6 million and Saskatchewan at $5.8 million.
Some $34.4 million went to the visual arts and $22.7 to media arts. That compares to $48 million for theatre, $47.8 for music and sound, $29.2 for dance and $27.9 for literature. More than $14 million was spent to support Indigenous arts.
