Vancouver's Capture Photography Festival has launched its inaugural writing prize, a juried award to support emerging writers.
The winner of the Capture Writing Prize will receive a $2,000 commission to write a 1,000-word text for Capture’s annual catalogue about a current issue related to lens-based art.
Applicants must self-define as an emerging writer, be at least 18 years of age and have a limited publishing history. Both Canadian and international writers can apply.
Capture is encouraging applications from under-represented voices.
Past issues of Capture’s annual catalogue have featured texts by writers, curators and artists such as Katie Belcher, David Campany, Douglas Coupland, Dean Daderko, Cliff Lauson, Kimberly Phillips, Cheyenne Rain LeGrande, Tania Willard and Jayne Wilkinson.
The inaugural jury will consist of Candice Hopkins, senior curator at the Toronto Biennial of Art; Sarah Milroy, chief curator at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection; and Capture’s executive director, Emmy Lee Wall.
The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on Sept. 14.
To enter, send an unpublished sample of your art writing (up to 1,000 words) and a C.V. or bio in PDF format to info@capturephotofest.com with the subject line Capture Writing Prize 2020. While the winner will be commissioned to write about lens-based art, the writing sample may be about art in any medium.
