Chinese photographer Wang Qingsong is the recipient of the Capture Photography Festival's inaugural $10,000 printing prize, awarded annually to help an artist present their work in the festival.
Wang's large-format photographs address China's rapidly changing society and have been displayed at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
His work will be shown at the Vancouver festival in April.
“The year of 2020 is destined to be unusual and terrific," Wang said. "By cause of COVID-19, a lot of international exhibitions and exchanges have been cancelled, including a number of my overseas exhibitions. However, Capture Photography Festival has awarded me this opportunity which I greatly appreciate."
The prize was juried by Claudia Beck, a writer, curator and collector; Tarah Hogue, curator (Indigenous art) at the Remai Modern; Ann Thomas, senior curator of photographs at the National Gallery of Canada; and Emmy Lee Wall, Capture’s executive director.
