The British Columbia government is spending $10 million to establish the Chinese Canadian Museum – the first in Canada.
A location in Vancouver is yet to be chosen for the museum, which will be overseen by the newly formed Chinese Canadian Museum Society of BC. It will have hubs throughout the province and an online portal.
The museum will explore the history of the province's Chinese-Canadian community and also document the ongoing Chinese-Canadian experience, delving into current events and visions for the future.
"The more people understand about each other's backgrounds, the better the society, the more we're going to hopefully reduce the kind of racism and other things that we see," Grace Wong, the chair of the museum society, told CBC News.
B.C.'s investment follows $1 million the province gave to the City of Vancouver last year to support initial planning for the museum.
This summer, the museum is opening a temporary exhibit, A Seat at the Table, in Vancouver's Chinatown. It will explore the pivotal role of food and restaurant culture in the evolution of the Chinese-Canadian community.
