Commissioned Installation at the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver
Samuel Roy-Bois, "Reward Friends, Punish Enemies," 2019, site-specific installation
An installation by Kelowna-based artist Samuel Roy-Bois is the latest work commissioned or the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver.
Reward Friends, Punish Enemies is a dramatic intervention in the architectural space of the gallery's lobby that alludes to the history of resource extraction in Canada.
Venetian blinds made from horizontal slats of discarded cedar obstruct the gallery’s carefully framed vista of the Burrard Inlet, while fir-timber beams seem to penetrate its plate glass windows, extending from the building’s interior into the outdoor plaza.
The artist's rustic, handcrafted aesthetic contrasts with the steel-and-glass design of new waterfront developments.
Roy-Bois, an assistant professor at UBC Okanagan, is known for his public art, photography, sculpture, performance and writing. He has exhibited across Canada and internationally, with a recent exhibition at the Kamloops Art Gallery.
Reward Friends, Punish Enemies is the third in a 10-year commissioning program of new public artworks installed at the Polygon Gallery in collaboration with the Burrard Arts Foundation.
