Construction Starts on New Gallery at Simon Fraser University
Simon Fraser University is starting construction on a new art gallery at its Burnaby campus, with an opening slated for early 2025.
The Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum – to be known as the Gibson – will replace the current SFU Gallery in the academic quadrangle.
The new facility will house the university's 5,800-work art collection and provide space for exhibitions and other programming.
It is named for a former director of the SFU Gallery, the late Edward Gibson, and his wife, Marianne, who donated $20 million to the project.
He joined the university as a charter faculty member in 1965, and headed the gallery from 1986 to 1997.
"What makes Edward and Marianne Gibson's vision so extraordinary is that it inspires an entirely new kind of visual arts facility," says SFU Galleries director Kimberly Phillips.
"In turn, we are committed to creating a space that manifestly reimagines what an art museum can do, and for whom it exists."
Designed by Toronto architect Siamak Hariri, the 12,000-square-foot facility will include an art studio and courtyard, as well as a salon with a hearth.
The site is near Burnaby Mountain's main transit hub.
The ground-breaking ceremony is Aug. 1.
