Toronto's Contact Photography Festival launched Friday with a citywide roster of lens-based work at galleries and public spaces.
The festival, which continues to May 31, features almost 100 artists, documentary photographers and photojournalists in its core program, including both national and international names, such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Joi T. Arcand, Catherine Blackburn, Maggie Groat, Meryl McMaster and Jin-me Yoon.
Contact's executive director, Tara Smith, said participants bring insights and observations on myriad local and global cultural, political and environmental issues.
The festival also features some 330 artists in more than 115 open call exhibitions in galleries and alternative spaces across the Metro Toronto area.
Contact co-presents various public programs, including lectures, panels, workshops and a photo book fair.
