Contemporary Calgary raised a record $2.2 million during LOOK: The Dada Ball fundraiser on Saturday, May 25.
The amount includes a $1 million donation from Canadian philanthropist and art auction sponsor Heather Edwards, in support of the gallery’s newly renovated theatre.
Dozens of Canadian artists contributed art to the gallery's auction, including Vancouver artist Angela Grossmann, whose painting, Promenade (in Pink), sold for $48,000, setting a Contemporary Calgary auction record.
Contemporary Calgary began its annual gala in 2014 as an art auction and fundraiser to support the establishment of the gallery and help turn the city's former Centennial Planetarium into an international centre for art. The 2023 event raised close to $1 million.
