Contemporary Calgary receives Donation for Educational Programming

Contemporary Calgary has announced it has received a $200,000 donation from TD Bank Group to go toward the gallery’s educational programming initiative. The money will allow the gallery to hire a full-time educational coordinator and two part-time facilitators and it will enable free programming for more than 8,000 children and youth ages five to 18.
The initiative supports the coordinator and facilitators with career development and helps break down barriers — financial, language, cultural, logistical — that may keep children and youth from visiting the gallery.
“I moved to Canada as a teen and the whole experience was a significant adjustment for me. Attending high school here was sometimes challenging, but the place where I felt most connected was in my art class. We could communicate through the visual arts regardless of our backgrounds or the languages we spoke,” said Yilu Xing in a news release. Xing is currently the Contemporary Calgary TD Educational Facilitator.
“Now as an adult, I’m really happy to be able to offer free art classes to kids from all different backgrounds at the art gallery. We’re using art to connect the community.”
