Contemporary Calgary will present a major Yoko Ono exhibition as part of its inaugural season at the city's former planetarium.
The featured exhibition is Yoko Ono’s Growing Freedom: The Instructions of Yoko Ono and The Art of John and Yoko. The show will open May 21 and run to Aug. 23.
The gallery will launch Jan. 23 with Planetary, a show that features work from 36 Calgary artists, as well as exhibitions by Britain's Luke Jerram, who will show Museum of the Moon, a scale model of the moon that measures six metres in diameter and features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. It will be suspended under the building's dome.
Contemporary Calgary also announced that regular admission will be $10 for a single visit and $20 for an annual membership.
Starting on Jan. 23, the gallery will be open to the public six days per week, Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Thursdays when the gallery remains open until 9 p.m.
“We’d love for every Calgarian to become a member of Contemporary Calgary,” said David Leinster, chief executive officer. “An art institution should limit the barriers for people to engage in cultural experiences. Our values are to be welcoming, inclusive, engaging and relevant."
A first phase of renovations on the former Centennial Planetarium has been completed, allowing exhibitions to commence in a 7,000-square-foot exhibition space.
