Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec’s Espace Riopelle addition has started — but the budget has almost doubled.
The original budget was $42.5 million, but now that site preparation is beginning, the project's budget has ballooned to $84 million, according to a story by Benjamin Sutton in The Art Newspaper.
The Quebec government is contributing more than double than originally pledged — from $20 million to $25 million. The Jean Paul Riopelle Foundation’s original pledge of $20 million may go up to $25 million. Quebec City’s municipal government has doubled its contribution to $5 million and the gallery’s foundation has quadrupled its support to $10 million. “The museum will launch a major fundraising campaign in the autumn,” Sutton notes.
Espace Riopelle is estimated to be completed in 2026 and was partly inspired by Riopelle’s studio.
