Darrin Martens has been appointed the senior curator of art at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives in Brampton, Ont. Martens, currently, the senior curator at the Audain Art Museum in Whistler, B.C., plans to join the Ontario gallery on June 18.
Marty Brent, manager of the Peel institution, welcomed Martens, citing his commitment to authenticity and his perpetual curiosity.
“Martens’ passion lies in exploring Canadian art history and, in particular, Indigenous arts and those within other under-represented communities,” she said. “His curatorial practice spans two decades and includes leadership positions with the Audain Art Museum, Nisga’a Museum and Burnaby Art Gallery.”
Martens has curated more than 50 exhibitions, including major retrospectives of Canadian artists such as Beau Dick, Takao Tanabe and Gordon Smith. He has more than 30 publications to his credit and has taught courses on curating and cultural management at the University of Victoria.
Martens said he is "energized by the opportunity to lead a vibrant, diverse and inclusive visual art curatorial program that looks critically at our history and issues that matter to us all.”
