Montreal artist Deanna Bowen – whose exhibition, A Harlem Nocturne, is on display at the Walter Phillips Gallery in Banff until July 18 – has won the $50,000 Scotiabank Photography Award.
The annual award, established in 2010, recognizes the achievements of established artists.
“Deanna's deeply personal connection to her art – in particular her photography – immerses the viewer in a brilliantly potent documentation of genealogy, race and migration in Canada,” says Edward Burtynsky, co-founder of the award and chair of the jury.
As part of the award, Bowen will receive a solo exhibition at the 2022 Contact Photography Festival in Toronto and a book of her work will be distributed by Steidl, a German publisher.
Three finalists – Annie MacDonell, Dawit L. Petros and Greg Staats – each received cash prizes of $10,000.
