Jody Phillips, executive director of the not-for-profit gallery and the Burnaby Arts Council, resigned in June 2024. Since then the gallery, which was founded in 1967, has been operating with help from volunteers, interns and the board of directors.
Deer Lake Gallery and the council have also experienced unexpected funding cuts and, this week, has announced the that the gallery would be closed until further notice. The board of directors is working on a plan to reopen the space in 2025, and a winter craft festival scheduled for November will also go ahead as planned.
Recent exhibitions have included shows from Jay Cabalu, Harem Jamal and Kriss Munsya.
