Dr. Stephen Borys named to Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board
Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq director and CEO Dr. Stephen Borys has been named a member of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (CCPERB.)
The four-year term began Feb. 18, 2024.
Borys is the only prairie representative on the board. His role will include helping to balance competing interests, promote inclusivity, and help change systems that have marginalized many, as well as adopt environmental improvements for a sustainable future.
CCPERB is a national board that “helps to ensure Canada’s cultural property is protected, preserved, and made accessible to the public and provides accountability and support to the institutions and individuals who create, acquire, and engage in the exchange of cultural property,” according to the WAG-Qaumajuq news release.
“CCPERB duties include certifying cultural property for income tax purposes, reviewing applications for refused cultural property export permits, and determining the amount of a fair cash offer.”
The board also helps determine what is considered to have national importance and outstanding significance, as well as the fair market value of collections and items donated or sold to Canadian museums, art galleries, archives and libraries.
“Protecting, preserving and making cultural property accessible to everyone is a passion of mine and I am excited to advance such work in this new capacity,” Dr. Borys said in the release.
Other board members include chairperson Joanne Stober, Susan MacKenzie, Daniel Chouinard, Tzu-I Chung, Laurie Dalton, Paul Whitney, Monte Clark, Patricia M. Feheley and Jo-Ann Kane.
