Edmonton artist Barbara Paterson has been appointed as a member of the Order of Canada by Governor General Mary Simon. Also named as members are two Toronto gallerists – Patricia Feheley and Olga Korpor.
Paterson is best known for bronze statues honouring the Famous Five, a group of women, including Emily Murphy and Nellie McClung, that fought for women's rights in the early 1900s. Her statues are installed on Parliament Hill and at Calgary's Olympic Plaza.
Feheley is a passionate champion for Inuit art through Feheley Fine Arts, while Korpor has operated the Olga Korpor Gallery, which promotes Canadian and international contemporary art, since 1973.
Simon announced 135 appointments to the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honours in late December. The list included two companions, 39 officers, one honorary member and 93 members.
The order recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. More than 7,000 people have been invested into the order, created in 1967. For more information, visit www.gg.ca/en/honours.
