Emily Carr, who received little recognition during her lifetime, will get more public attention when Vancouver opens a transit station named in her honour.
The Great Northern Way – Emily Carr Station, located near Emily Carr University, is scheduled to open in 2025.
TransLink recently unveiled the final station names for its Broadway Subway Project.
The future station is located next to the art school on Great Northern Way.
Carr actually lived in Victoria, but her work reflects the land and people of British Columbia's West Coast, offering viewers a doorway to the art and culture of the Indigenous communities that welcomed her onto their lands.
"Today, her art encourages audiences to think about the colonial frameworks that have shaped our society, and invites us to educate ourselves on how this province was settled," the university said.
TransLink and the provincial government have designated the university as a community partner to help bring a new public art installation to the station.
Construction on the Broadway subway project is expected to begin this fall,
